Few area chefs have a more impressive resume than David Lani. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, New York, in 2000, he worked with the legendary Jean-Jacques Rachou at Manhattan’s La Côte Basque, as well as David Burke at the Park Avenue Café. From there Lani’s travels took him to Las Vegas, where he cooked for Charlie Palmer at Aureole at the Mandalay Bay Resort, and did stints with Wolfgang Puck at Postrio and as a trainer at Wolfgang Puck Express. When he interviewed with Colin Estrem for the job of executive chef at 7th Avenue Social, which Estrem opened earlier this year, the two men immediately discovered a shared passion for food and hospitality.read more
Here in South Florida our years aren’t measured from January to December, but instead from one high season to the next high season. When I wonder when a restaurant opened, I always think in seasons. Was that last season or two seasons ago?
And while the summers aren’t as quiet as they used to be, most of the restaurant openings tend to take place during high season. As we still loll in the downtime of summer, here are two of my favorites that opened last season in Naples.read more
When Colin and Kitsi Estrem named their new restaurant, they got it right with “7th Avenue Social.” “The Social,” as it’s already been affectionately tagged in town, perfectly describes the spacious yet cozy locale across from Naples’ City Hall. The Estrems themselves, longtime proprietors of Avenue Wine Café on Fifth, are warm, gregarious and eager to welcome guests to their latest endeavor.
With a unique blend of Florida-Southern hospitality and cuisine, The Social offers live music, late-night food service and a whiskey-spiked cocktail list as just the start of what draws you into one of the turquoise settees and artfully mismatched chairs in the dining room.read more
The chalkboard walls, mismatched tables (in that crafty, Monica sort of way) and cozy wing-backed loveseat into which I’d plopped screamed Central Perk, the fictional coffee shop of “Friends” fame.
But I wasn’t in some Hollywood backlot, I was in Naples, two blocks south of Fifth Avenue South, at the 4-month-old restaurant that’s helping to hipster-fy this pressed-linens and lengthy-wine-lists town — 7th Avenue Social.read more
You’d think that with the number of restaurants in Naples every aspect of the dining scene would be covered. Well, it turns out there was one glaring omission — late-night dining.
Two restaurants have stepped up recently to grab that late-night crowd. Avenue 5 is the beautiful modern restaurant that replaced McCabe’s Irish Pub on 5th Avenue South. Just this week they announced a late-night happy hour and dining menu for diners after 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday. With the Sugden Theatre directly next door, this should be a popular spot with the after-theater crowd.read more
There have been many restaurants in this location over the years. In addition to their outdoor dining area, this iteration has done a wonderful job on their interior remodel.

Eclectic Florida seems to be the consistent theme in the cool, casual space that is 7th Avenue Social — and it’s presided over by a blindfolded boar which hangs just to the right of the entry.
Owner Colin Estrem will happily tell you the story behind the boar, the artwork, the interior design — anything you ask. Estrem, who also owns Avenue Wine Café, worked with Paradise Furnishings and Jeremy Jones Fine Finishes to make the restaurant’s concept — “casual, a little off beat,” Estrem says — a reality.read more

I’ve been covering Southwest Florida food for the better part of the last decade (with the waistline to prove it).
